The Difference Between Extension Springs and Torsion Springs

August 21, 2023

For the average homeowner, the extent of knowledge of garage doors starts and stops with the remote control button. Few know the intricacies associated with the cables, springs, pulleys, motor, and wiring that is involved in most garage doors with automatic openers. Let’s take a minute and explore a major component of a garage door, which is the spring. Extension springs and torsion springs basically perform the same function, but one is superior for the following reasons.

Unlike extension springs, torsion springs do not completely expand and contract during use. Torsion springs turn rather than expand and contract, which contributes to their longevity. Speaking of longevity, most torsion springs can last between 15,000-20,000 cycles. Extension springs typically last about 10,000 cycles, which is significantly less than torsion springs, so homeowners with these springs will likely have to make calls for garage door repair more frequently.

Garage springs, like most moving parts, require lubrication. Extension springs contain more components than torsion springs and these components require lubrication, which is often problematic because they are difficult to access. Torsion springs can be lubricated by most homeowners without difficulty.

Another benefit associated with torsion springs is that they are easier on the operator. Extension springs can create a jerking motion when the door is lifted, whereas torsion springs are not subject to jerking motions. Rather, they allow the door to smoothly and effortlessly open.

Lastly, there is a significant difference between torsion springs and extension springs with respect to failure. When an extension spring breaks, it can fly through a car or garage window and cause extensive damage. Conversely, when torsion springs break, the spring remains intact, eliminating the risk of damage or injury.

It might seem clear that torsion springs are better options when compared to extension springs, but it is important to know that torsion springs cost more than extension springs so consumers need to ask themselves “do I want to pay more now or later?” To learn more about which type of spring is best for your garage door, or to make a request for garage door repair or installation, contact the expert staff at Town & Country Door today!
