The garage door is something that most of us use every day, and we usually don’t give it much thought until it gets damaged or starts to malfunction. It’s important to remember that, while the functionality of a garage door is important, its safety should be your primary concern. Your garage door is likely the largest piece of moving equipment in or around your home, and you or your loved ones could be seriously injured if your unsafe door malfunctions. So, whether you just moved into a new home and haven’t tested out the garage door yet, or it’s just been a while since you tested your garage door’s safety, performing the following tasks will help you know if it is safe to use.
To check your door’s balance, unlock the trip release mechanism and keep the door in the closed position. Then, manually lift the door with your hands. If the door is properly balanced, you will be able to easily lift the door and it should remain open about 3 or 4 feet from the ground.
The force setting determines how much force the garage door uses to raise and lower. To test this setting, use your hands to apply moderate pressure to the bottom of the door as it closes. If the door doesn’t reverse, then the resistance setting is too high.
This mechanism is designed to prevent the garage door from continuing its downward motion once it makes contact with an obstruction. To test your door’s reverse capabilities, place a block of wood in the path of the door. If the door doesn’t immediately reverse after making contact with the block, the opener may need to be replaced or repaired.
If your garage door fails any of these tests, you should stop using it immediately and make a call to a professional who can make the necessary repairs and determine whether any parts need to be replaced. At Town & Country Door, our team of experienced contractors has the skills and knowledge to perform any garage door repair job with quality and precision.
