How Can I Repair A Dented Garage Door?
If you run a busy household, your home is bound to suffer some form of wear and tear. From scratches on walls to broken pipes to dents in your garage door, home maintenance and repairs come with the territory of being a homeowner.
Luckily, minor dents in a metal garage door aren’t too difficult to fix, even for those who are new to the task. The following steps can get your garage door back in shape in no time.
Fix-It Supplies
To fix a minor dent in an aluminum or steel garage door, you’ll need the following supplies:
- Block of wood
- Rubber mallet
- Plastic putty knife
- 120 grit sandpaper
- Auto body filler or pre-mixed patching compound
- Primer
- Paint
Fix-It Steps
- Wash the area well with detergent and water and dry. Place a wooden block on the dent and gently tap with your rubber mallet to flatten it out. Shift block around and keep tapping until dented area is as level as possible with the rest of your door.
- Lightly sand the dented area with 120 grit sandpaper until the surface is smooth. Apply patching compound (or mixed auto body filler) to dented area and even it out with your putty knife. Allow the compound to dry.
- Sand down the compound to create a smooth surface. Apply primer to the area and paint. Depending on the size of the dent and the overall condition of your garage door, you may want to paint the entire door to give it a more professional finish.
Your home’s garage plays an important role in the visual appeal of your home. A garage door that’s dented, chipped or broken will lower the standard of your property. Minor garage door dents need not diminish your home’s curb appeal or reduce its value. By taking the time to repair dents while they are small, you can maintain your home's attractive appearance and avoid more expensive repair costs later down the line.
